Danville defeats Burgin to reach All 'A' regional title game

January 23, 2004

MONTICELLO - Danville's girls jumped out to an 11-0 lead and used that cushion to defeat Burgin 55-42 in the semifinals of the 12th Region All "A" Classic Thursday.

Danville advances to the finals, where the Admirals (10-3) will face host Monticello (5-11), which defeated Somerset 49-44. The championship game will be Saturday at 7 p.m. and a win would put the Admirals in the state tournament for the first time.

"We're looking forward to Saturday night, and I hope we can put a good game together," Danville coach Justin Schommer said. "We have to play a tough Monticello team, and we'll have our hands full playing them on their home court."

Burgin (9-7) had its hands full early as the Admirals opened the game on a tear. Burgin coach Keith Monson said his team had a hard time bouncing back from that early defensive lull.

"Danville was ready to play," Monson said. "They came out gunning, and that set the tone of the game. We never did overcome that."

"We got off to good start in the first quarter, and we were able to get some easy baskets to start the game," Schommer said. "We were able to build some confidence."

Danville's Krystal Jackson led all scorers with 20 points, and Tasha Milby added 14 points off Danville's bench. Stephanie Stewart led Burgin with 10 points, and Stewart and Taylor Bottoms each had five rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.

Burgin was 16 of 39 from the field for 41 percent, but Monson said he was disappointed in his team's rebounding effort. Burgin grabbed just 24 rebounds.

"We didn't go to the boards at all," Monson said. "They whipped us to death on the boards and they got lot of easy putbacks. We didn't play that bad of a game, but I'm disappointed in our blocking out and going at the rebounds. I'm really pulling for them to win the tournament."

DANVILLE (10-3) - Renee Chiu 4, Morgan Young 1, Monica Vonderbrink 9, Shatoniah Miller 4, Krystal Jackson 20, Tasha Milby 14, Diamond Smith 3.

BURGIN (9-7) - Andrea Warner 5, Taylor Bottoms 8, Stephanie Stewart 10, Bev Harris 8, Clara Sanders 4, Meredith Lear 2, Ericka Waggener 5.
