Centre sweeps Hendrix

Centre College's women got their first conference win of the season and the Centre men got strong play from their bench as the Colonels swept Hendrix Friday at Danville.

The Centre women (4-13, 1-5 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) got huge games from Liz Braun and Jacqueline Coleman in defeating second-place Hendrix (12-5, 4-2) 65-59.

Coleman scored a game-high 27 points for Centre, and Braun added 17 rebounds and eight blocked shots.

"Liz did a great job on the boards for us," Centre coach Jennifer Ruff said. "She really took away their inside post players with her blocks and kept them out of the paint."

Centre led by as many as 15 points in the second half, but Hendrix started to make a comeback with five minutes to play. However, Centre hit its free throws down the stretch to win the game.

"This was a big win for us," Ruff said. "It's probably the best game we've played so far. I'm really proud of the way they played."

For the men, Jordan Sucher hit three 3-pointers and Matt Jacobson added two as the Centre bench scored 23 points in the Colonels' 64-51 victory over winless Hendrix.

Centre coach Greg Mason said he was pleased with his team's overall play.

"The mark of this team is we are a team," Mason said. "When our starting guards don't shoot well, we get guys off the bench to make key plays. When we get in foul trouble with Rob King, Coy Zerhusen steps in and has good play. We're winning as a team."

Centre (13-3, 5-1) also got 13 points and 11 rebounds from freshman Reggie Magnusson on the inside.

Hendrix (0-14, 0-6) shot just 37.3 percent from the floor and was outrebounded 35-25.
