Our state representative, Mike Harmon, has attached his support to several pieces of legislation currently before the Kentucky General Assembly. The overwhelming majority of it presses a conservative agenda on a variety of social issues: marriage, abortion, human embryos, and cloning, for example. The notable exception is a proposal he sponsored (and was co-sponsored by only one other representative) that would put constitutional limits on state government spending. An appealing proposal on the surface but impractical and dangerous for several reasons (see HB 347).
The latest bill to include his sponsorship (HB 358) would prohibit adoption and foster care in a home where a parent is homosexual, bisexual, or transgendered. What a shame that Mr. Harmon considers it a priority to limit the opportunities of homeless, parentless, abused, or otherwise disadvantaged children to live in a loving home with a caring and responsible adult. This piece of legislation goes beyond any moral agenda to spread hurt and hate at the expense of innocent and abandoned children.
