Balance helps Centre men beat Oglethorpe 86-81

February 02, 2004

Centre College put five players in double figures, shot 48.2 percent from the field and withstood a late rally by host Oglethorpe University to record an 86-81 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory Sunday.

"We jumped on top early and led by 18 points in the second half," said Centre coach Greg Mason. "We played excellent basketball for the first 35 minutes. The last five minutes, we struggled to defend and take care of the ball and let the game get closer than we should have.

"But we did get a huge win on the road. We got a big defensive stop at the end, got a rebound we needed and then hit free throws to win the game."

Rob King and Coy Zerhusen both had 15 points to lead the Colonels (15-4, 7-2 SCAC). Zerhusen was 6-for-11 from the field and also had 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals. King was 6-for-10 from the field in his 16 minutes of play.

Their play helped offset the illness of center Reggie Magnusson, who was limited to 11 minutes of play and had just six points and one rebound.

"Rob had the best game he's had in a long time," Mason said. "Coy came up huge again. It was his kind of game and he really crashed the offensive board. Him and James Booker have been our most consistent players recently and he really had a big game for us again."

Guard John Ortega also had 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting and three assists in 23 minutes of play despite being bothered by an injured thumb.

"He just fought through the injury and really played well," Mason said.

Another guard, Kyle Roby, went 8-for-8 at the foul line to score 11 points.

Centre was 27-for-56 from the field and 22-for-29 at the foul line. The losers were 23-for-49 from the field and 26-for-31 at the foul line. Josh Burr led Oglethorpe with a game-high 25 points and was 14-for-18 at the foul line.

"The best thing about the game is that we were able to grind out a win on the road," Mason said. "We got two good road wins this weekend coming off a loss at home. Now we just have to make sure we take care of business Saturday when we host Sewanee and keep our momentum going. "
