The wood-chip trail in Millennium Park will be named the Joe Clarke Eagle Scout Trail in memory of the deceased statesman and local attorney.
Danville-Boyle County joint park committee agreed to the change Wednesday, on the suggestion of local attorney Mark Morgan.
Members passed the motion unanimously, with the stipulation that they would wait for Danville Mayor John W.D. Bowling's OK. He had to leave early for another meeting.
Morgan said he and his wife will underwrite the upkeep of the trail as a memorial to Clarke. Local scouts will be recruited to work on the trail, build benches and plant hardwoods.
The trail is on the west side of the pond at Millennium Park. In the future, Morgan said he would like to extend it around the east side to make it loop. Another suggestion from the committee was to have the trail follow the cross-country run, along the stream that leads to Lannock neighborhood.
