As an obstetrician-gynecologist who is struggling to stay in business due to the high cost of medical liability insurance, I found it quite interesting that the Kentucky Democratic Party has elected a trial attorney, Mr. Bill Garmer, to be their chairman. Mr. Garmer makes his living by suing doctors. Doctors and their patients can expect little help from him and his party to solve this problem.
The Democratic Party claims to be for the disadvantaged. Last year, we delivered the babies of more than 750 women from Boyle, Garrard, Casey, Mercer, Lincoln, Russell and Jessamine counties. More than 50 percent had Medicaid. Who will provide quality obstetrical care for them when we can no longer afford the insurance? If the Democrats care about these women they should help rather than obstruct efforts to solve this problem. At least we have a governor who understands the severity of this crisis.
