Sometimes, people are so consumed with hatred for a particular person or philosophy, they lose touch with reality. This is especially true in the political arena. Otherwise intelligent people make rash statements, charges and accusations that are not supported by facts. Several recent letters to this column continue to lambaste President Bush. One such letter makes repeated "reality" statements that are not realistic at all.
One such statement quotes President Bush as saying that "the men and women of Afghanistan are building a nation that is free and proud." He goes onto quote another agency saying Afghanistan is neither "safe nor stable" There is a huge difference in those terms. Anything under construction is much more dangerous before completion of the project.
The writers then go on to the WMD issue, based on statements made by David Kay. Mr. Kay said if there was any blame it was on the intelligence agencies. Agencies that were decimated by the previous administration. According to Mr. Kay, even Saddam Hussein thought he had a stockpile of WMDs, as well as programs to develop new ones. Could this be the reason he stonewalled the UN inspectors.
