Editorial: Kerr the best choice for the 6th District

February 15, 2004

We'd be the first to admit that the current campaign to fill Ernie Fletcher's congressional seat has been one of the worst we've ever witnessed. The radio and television advertising by both candidates has been inane, shallow, negative and, in some cases, downright dishonest.

But as turned off as we - and perhaps many other 6th District voters - may be by the quality of the campaign, we still must choose on Tuesday whether we want Republican Alice Forgy Kerr and Democrat Ben Chandler to represent us in the U.S. Congress.

For us, the choice is easy. Kerr is clearly the conservative candidate in this race who is most likely to be on the right side when it comes to the important issues that face our country and our state at this time: the war on terrorism, retaining the Bush tax cuts, energizing the national and Kentucky economies, and medical malpractice reform and other health-care issues.

We have nothing negative to say about Ben Chandler. He served ably in the positions of state attorney general and state auditor. What we're concerned about - and what voters should be concerned about Tuesday - is how Chandler would vote if he were elected to Congress. As a legislator - since he's never been one - he's a blank check, and one we'd rather not write.

On the other hand, Kerr has served two terms in the state Senate and has established a record as a solid, conservative legislator.

But don't take our word for it, take the word of Kentuckians who have worked with her. She's been endorsed by the Kentucky chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business, by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, by the Kentucky State Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police and by Lexington Firefighters Local 526.

Tom Underwood, director of NFIB/Ky, said in his organization's endorsement: "Alice Forgy Kerr is a fiscal conservative who has proven herself a leader on behalf of small-business owners in Kentucky. ... NFIB members have always found Sen. Kerr approachable, professional, and committed to promoting and protecting small-business owners and their livelihoods."

The FOP was equally supportive of Kerr. The FOP said, "She understands the need to provide the resources they need to reduce crime in our communities ... . Senator Kerr's leadership abilities and work with our nation's leaders will help create a safer and more secure community for the citizens of Kentucky."

That's the kind of legislator we want representing us In Washington at one of the most difficult times in our nation's history.
