Host Trinity's hot shooting beats Centre

February 16, 2004

SAN ANTONIO - Centre College had what coach Greg Mason called its "best defensive intensity in three weeks" here Sunday but it was still not nearly enough to stop host Trinity University from winning 75-61.

"Trinity just played a fantastic game and was at a level I am not sure anyone in our conference could match," said Mason. "Or defensive intensity was the best it had been in three weeks, but Trinity still shot 57.1 percent. Give Trinity credit. They were clearly the better team today."

The winners (19-4, 10-2 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) took advantage of their size inside to shoot 61.3 percent (19 for 31) in the first half. In the second half, Centre defended the inside better only to see Trinity go 5-for-6 from 3-point range.

"We let them catch the ball too much inside the first half. We corrected that, but then they started making 3-point shots," Mason said.

Centre (16-7, 8-4) had trouble making shots. The Colonels shot just 33 percent overall and were only 4-for-25 (16 percent) from 3-point range.

"To beat Trinity, you've got to guard them hard and then make open shots. We got the shots, but we couldn't make them," Mason said.

Rob King led Centre with 14 points, nine rebounds, one assist and one steal. Freshman Matt Jacobson was 5-for-9 from the field and added 12 points off the bench. Center Reggie Magnusson and guard John Ortega each had 11 points.

"Jacobson is becoming more assertive offensively and doing a better job guarding people. He's not playing like a freshman now," Mason said. "Rob King also played well, as did John Ortega."

Coy Zerhusen struggled offensively with just one point, but he pulled off a game-high 14 rebounds, including five on the offensive end.

"He got those rebounds against a big, long team," Mason said. "He really battled inside."

Centre returns home to host DePauw Friday and Rose-Hulman Sunday to close out regular-season play.
