Five Danville wrestlers earn state berths

February 22, 2004

ELIZABETHTOWN - Five of six Danville wrestlers earned spots in the state tournament Saturday, while the sixth will make the trip as an alternate.

Phillip Mathis finished third in the 152-pound class to lead the small contingent of Danville wrestlers in the 2nd Region Championships at Central Hardin.

Mathis rebounded after losing his first match to win twice, pinning Daniel Cain of Fort Knox in the closing seconds of the second period in the third-place match.

Dylan Hester (130 pounds), Jacob Phillips (135), Matt Booth (140) and Derrick Lang (189) finished fourth in their respective classes. The top four finishers in each class earn berths in the state meet, which begins Thursday at Frankfort.

Chris Booth (125) was fifth, making him the first alternate from the region. He will wrestle at state only if one of the four boys ahead of him can't compete.

"It's good to have all of them make it to state," Danville coach Jeff Selby said. "We don't have to buy a ticket."
