Editor's note: This is the first in a series of columns submitted by the Danville- Boyle County Humane Society animal shelter.
The Pet of the Week photo you see in this newspaper every Wednesday represents the dozens of unwanted puppies, dogs, kittens and cats that end up at the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society each week. If you've never visited our animal shelter, we invite you to come see first-hand what happens when pet owners don't neuter the animals in their care.
Though a few of the cats and dogs that arrive at the shelter end up there because their owners are too sick or too old to care for them - or for some other legitimate reason - the vast majority are there because of ignorance or carelessness on the part of their owners. These owners either don't realize the harm that indiscriminate breeding can cause - or they simply don't care.
