Burgin girls fall

Boyle, Danville and Casey boys win

February 29, 2004

Taylor Bottoms scored her 1,000th point, but it was a long day for the Burgin girls in a 53-50 loss Saturday at Williamsburg.

Burgin shot just 12 free throws to Williamsburg's 36, and Bulldogs coach Keith Monson said he was disappointed in the game itself.

"We played well enough to win," Monson said. "We played a 2-3 zone the whole second half, but I knew we were in trouble when Taylor Bottoms fouled out with her forehead against another girl's elbow. I knew at that point it was going to be an experience for our girls."

Bottoms led the Bulldogs with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Andrea Warner also scored 10 points and had a team-high six assists.

Zach Cooley had a rebound and put-back to get Boyle within four points, and Boyle coach Andy Moberly called a time out with 18 seconds left and Boyle trailing by two.

"We drew up a play we hadn't practiced, and Blake hit a 3 to win the game," Moberly said. "I told the kids, 'You executed the play the way it was drawn up, and Blake was fortunate enough to hit the basket."

Pulaski got the ball across midcourt and called a timeout with two seconds left, but Boyle turned them over to seal the win.
