Couple die in apparent murder-suicide

THRUSTON (AP) - A three-hour standoff Monday ended with what police said was the apparent murder-suicide of a Daviess County couple, a newspaper reported.

An Owensboro police emergency response team forcibly entered a home in a Thruston subdivision at 4:30 p.m. CST to find Cindy Walker Payne, 29, dead from multiple gunshot wounds to the head, the Messenger-Inquirer of Owensboro reported.

The subdivision was closed for three hours while police negotiated with her husband, 36-year-old Robert Daniel Payne. Owensboro Police Chief John Kazlauskas said Payne fatally shot himself within minutes after the team entered the home.

The couple had a young son and daughter.

The daughter was home when the incident began but left about 2 p.m. with Daviess County Sheriff's Deputy Scott Ingram, who was the first officer to arrive following a call of a man threatening to shoot his wife.
