A man fleeing pursuit by police in Garrard County died early this morning when his car struck a tree, Kentucky State Police said.
Joel E. Newcomb, 23, of Livingston, was driving a Nissan Sentra "in a reckless manner," according to KSP, when police attempted to pull him over at 11:15 Thursday night. Newcomb, however, fled and led police on 4.5-mile chase along Sugar Creek Road.
Newcomb eventually "failed to negotiate a curve on Sugar Creek Road and left the roadway, striking a tree head-on," said KSP.
Newcomb was airlifted to University of Kentucky Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:41 this morning.
A passenger in Newcomb's car, who was not identified, was taken to Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford. His condition is unknown.
