Members of Congress are right on target in their current effort to head off a new round of court-clogging, trial lawyer-enriching, business-harassing litigation.
The U.S. House voted 276-139 Wednesday to ban class action lawsuits against the food industry that claim that the industry is responsible for the nation's epidemic of obesity. A similar measure has been introduced in the U.S. Senate by Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
Don't get us wrong: Obesity is a serious health issue. The government said last week that it could edge out smoking as the No. 1 preventable cause of death. The government report said two out of three adults and 9 million children are overweight or obese.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why this is: Americans eat too much of the wrong kinds of food and don't get enough exercise to burn off all of those calories.
