Centre softball team sweeps Defiance

The Centre College softball team swept a doubleheader from Defiance Friday with a pair of one-run wins, 7-6 and 10-9.

Centre (5-1) needed extra innings to win the second game at Millennium Park, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning after Defiance (0-4) had scored once in the top of the inning.

The Colonels matched Defiance in the fifth and sixth innings, answering the Yellow Jackets' three-run fifth with two runs in the bottom of the inning and scoring four times in the sixth to tie the game at 8-all after Defiance added three more.

Junior Holly Phillips led Centre's offense with two home runs and three RBIs in five at-bats.

Macy Dykema went 2-for-6 with two RBIs, capping a 4-for-10 afternoon. Terra Caudill and Marjorie Pilkinton also had two hits each, and Pilkinton had a triple and an RBI.


Erin Grumley earned her second win of the day after allowing only one run on four hits and a walk in four relief innings.

Centre did most of its damage early in the first game, taking a 5-1 lead after three innings.

Dykema went 2-for-4 with four RBIs for Centre, which had nine hits, and Leah Tufts was 2-for-3.


At Danville, Defiance (1-0) used 14 hits and seven errors by Centre (0-3) to beat the Colonels 15-5 Friday.

The Yellow Jackets, playing their season opener, were off and running with a three-run first inning. Centre pulled within 4-2 in the third inning, but Defiance scored 10 runs over the next three innings.

Senior Mike White, the first of five pitchers used by Centre, took the loss.

The Colonels had five hits, all singles.
