The nerve, the unmitigated gall shown by a handful of House Democrats who defied the will of House Speaker Jody Richards and met with Gov. Ernie Fletcher to work out a "tax modernization" plan for the state.
The six Democrats who met with the Republican governor and joined him at a press conference Thursday apparently were treated harshly by Richards at a Democratic caucus later that day. It's very likely, however, that Kentucky voters are going to be harsher on Richards than they will be on the Democrats who tried to bring about a much-needed compromise on a tax package.
One of the six was veteran Rep. Jack Coleman of Burgin who has a history of showing bipartisan leadership in the legislature. Coleman denied Monday that he had been involved in a series of "secret meetings" with the Republican administration - as alleged by Richards - but he admitted that he met with the governor Wednesday night and attended the press conference Thursday.
