Garrard offering used tire disposal

March 24, 2004

LANCASTER - Garrard County residents can dispose of used tires for free Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the state Department of Highways facility on Industry Road.

Under the state tire amnesty, residents can bring an unlimited number of tires for disposal. Tire businesses and recyclers are not eligible.

"It's just something we do as a community service," said David Thacker, a public information officer for District 7 of the Department of Highways in Lexington. "It makes it a lot easier to clean up than people just throwing them on the side of the road."

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, there are at least 300 million tires in scrap piles around the country. The United States, says the EPA, generates 281 million scrap tires a year, although most are recycled or used as fuel.

The facility will accept tires 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

For more information, call Bill Hack, the county's solid waste coordinator, at (859) 792-1868, or Judge-Executive E.J. Hasty at 792-3531.

Tire amnesty days in surrounding counties will be held in the coming weeks. Tires can be brought to any county, regardless of where a resident lives.
