STANFORD - A Monticello woman was killed Wednesday in a fiery two-car collision on U.S. 27 that closed the road for over an hour and sent two others by helicopter to a Lexington emergency room.
According to State Police, Brandy L. Jones, 25, was traveling south on U.S. 27 when she struck a 2001 Chevy Pickup head-on. She had reportedly passed another vehicle and did not return completely to her own lane. Police say she was not wearing a seat belt and died on impact.
Employees of a near-by business, Driftwood Electrical Contractors Inc., called 911 at approximately 5:20 p.m. They advised dispatchers that one of the vehicles had caught fire.
Jones' 1999 Toyota Camry ignited soon after impact. Her body was entrapped.
"There were passers-by who helped with their fire extinguishers," said Stanford Fire Chief Kenny McDaniel, which included EMS workers after they arrived. McDaniel said the second vehicle was not at risk of catching fire.
