LIBERTY - The 362 pupils at Liberty Elementary School appear to have learned something - how to douse a principal and get away with it - from the books they have read this school year.
Principal Marcenia Brown, standing in a boat dressed in a raincoat and boots went along with the pupils Friday as they soaked her with their water pistols, and tossed water on her with cups and buckets. Liberty Volunteer Fire Department also got into the action with it's fire hose to spray water on Brown.
After drying off, the principal went into each classroom and read a book to the pupils.
Brown made her pupils a promise last fall. If they read more books, she would take to the water. However, she did not expect them to read more than 28,000 books in such a short time.
Betty Wesley along with a teacher from each classroom were on the reading committee that planned the event, then encouraged the pupils to read as many books as they could. By Feb. 26, they had read 26,127 books. The count is not in for March, but Wesley thinks it will be well over the 28,000 mark.
