First off, I am not the type of person to voice my opinion openly in a newspaper. However, the story concerning the Yorkshire terrier being killed in it's own yard by a neighbor's Rottweiller absolutely stunned me. I lost a dog due to old age I had owned for 14 years and it took at least a year for me to get over it. I can't begin to imagine how the Long family feels knowing that their 12-year-old daughter and 18-year-old niece had to witness the brutal killing.
I'm sure the Longs loved their Yorkie like a member of their own family, but what if it had been their child? Is that what it is going to take to update the ordinance? I know some people don't think animals can be loved so dearly, but I for one know they can.
I pray for the Long family and sincerely hope that the ordinance will be updated to have stricter laws, fines and more remedies for vicious dogs. I just hope the defenseless Yorkie didn't lose his life in vain.
