Dean questioned Edwards about the possibility of an accomplice, but Edwards said his investigation had turned up no evidence that anyone else had been involved in the kidnapping.

Speculation about fake pregnancy not addressed

Speculation that Shelton had faked a pregnancy over the past few months was not addressed at Monday's hearing.

Police executed a search warrant April 6 of the Lexington residence of Shelton, and found items including notes that list names and gifts received at a baby shower and the book, "What to Expect When You're Expecting."

A baby room was included in the search, where a Wal-Mart gift registry announcement and wish list was found on the changing table. Police also recovered an ultrasound, reading, "It's a boy," and a blank birth certificate.

The discovery of miscarriage instructions mirrors statements made by family members that Shelton may have previously miscarried.

The instructions were printed at St. Joseph's Hospital, Lexington, in March 2003.

Edwards said after the hearing that Shelton's car is impounded in Stanford and will be sent to a Frankfort lab to search for DNA evidence linking the baby to the car.

In a post-hearing interview, Dean declined to say what strategy the defense plans to employ.

"I am only recently involved with the case, and we have a great deal to investigate," he said. "It would be premature to speak any further."

Emerson also attended the hearing, but declined to speak to reporters afterward.
