Hoagland to kick at Hope

Lee Hoagland rejected Hope College the first time his father suggested it as a possibility, but now he's glad he gave the school a second look.

The Boyle County kicker, who was Boyle's kickoff specialist last season, discovered that the Division III school was a good fit for him.

"(Boyle) coach (Chuck) Smith helped me make a highlight video, and we went up there over Christmas," he said. "I toured the place and really liked it. They were really interested in what I had to offer as a kicker."

Before his visit, Hoagland wasn't interested in Hope at all. His sister had considered attending the Holland, Mich., school and his father suggested it when he started looking at colleges.

"I wanted to go to a bigger school, but I didn't really know," he said.

Hoagland, who plans to major in biology and enter a pre-med program, said he hadn't given much consideration to kicking in college until late last fall.

"Toward the end of the season this year, everyone started asking me, 'Are you going to kick in college?' and I had never really thought about it," he said.

When he started looking into it, he found he was probably best suited for a small school.

"It became pretty apparent to me that, one, I probably didn't have the ability to play D-I, and, two, I wasn't committed enough to play football and work my schedule around that," he said.
