Skatepark should not be in residential area

May 07, 2004

Dear Editor:

In regard to a recent letter stating that Jackson Park belongs to the community: Yes, I agree, but let me state a few facts. First of all, my husband and I have lived at 602 Parklawn Drive since March 1968, and the tennis court at Jackson Park is directly behind our house.

While living on Parklawn, we have seen many disturbing and annoying happenings at the park. The previous basketball court had to be done away with due to excess noise, foul language, alcohol and a large amount of traffic. The lights at the tennis court were turned off for the same reasons: People wanting to play tennis all night, and no one wanted to obey the park's closing time. The police were constantly called about the disturbances. I believe if a skatepark is located on the tennis court, the above problems could possibly start again.

I am sure there are other locations in Danville that would be suitable for this project. As has been said, "If you build it, they will come."

When the project was first discussed, the property owners around Jackson Park attended a city commission meeting and expressed their concern about the location of the skatepark. We are not opposed to a skatepark and believe it is needed, but not located near a residential area.
