On a recent visit to my mother-in-law's hometown of Gainesville, Fla., I witnessed firsthand the benefits of a skateboard facility built inside a city park. It was packed with enthusiasts! It is time, with summer just around the corner, that Parks and Recreation address the needs of those kids that go beyond team sports. We have enough softball fields, baseball diamonds and soccer fields. Surely, there's room where these kids can hone their talents, sharpen their skills? And as a healthcare professional, research indicates the benefits of a healthy body have a direct correlation with a healthy mind.
This isn't just about the kids, either. My husband and I play tennis from time to time at Jackson Park when the tennis courts at Bate and Centre are full. Those courts are in terrible shape. Sacrificing the courts to skateboarders and building new courts at Millenium for those of us who can't play baseball or soccer anymore sounds like something everyone could agree on.
