UK grad moving from football to finance

LEXINGTON- Harrodsburg's Dan Hopewell believes he is well prepared to make the transition from the football field to the financial world. Hopewell, a double major in marketing and management, received his bachelor's degree at the University of Kentucky's 137th Commencement Saturday in Lexington's Rupp Arena.

A quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive back at Harrodsburg High School, Hopewell earned second team all-state honors from the Associated Press and was an honor roll student.

Although he saw limited game action during his four years as a wide receiver on the Wildcats' football team, Hopewell maintained his solid performance in the classroom, earning a place on the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Academic Honor Roll in 2001, as well as being inducted into UK's prestigious Frank G. Ham Society of Character. His overall 3.0 grade point average and other accomplishments at UK helped him land a position as a financial representative for Northwestern Mutual Life in Lexington, where he will begin work on May 17.

"My UK experience has been invaluable," said Hopewell. "I've had the chance to meet so many different people from so many diverse backgrounds. It's really helped me to grow."

Another factor which Hopewell has encountered during his years on campus might at first seem to be a negative. During his UK career, the 5 feet 10 inch, 187-pound Hopewell played for three head coaches - Hal Mumme in 2000, Guy Morriss in 2001 and 2002, and Rich Brooks in 2003.

"Going through all of the coaching changes was a hard thing. But I look back at it and realize that it made me tougher and stronger. It prepares you for the real world," said Hopewell.

There are two memories from his time as a Wildcat that Hopewell always will cherish. First is playing alongside his younger brother, Andrew, a running back who will enter his junior season for Kentucky this fall. Second is the camaraderie he enjoyed both on and off the field with his fellow wide receivers, including Derek Abney, Chris Bernard, Tommy Cook, and others.

Dan is the son of David (a member of UK Football's Peach Bowl Championship team of 1976) and Teri Hopewell of 575 Moores Lane, Harrodsburg.

Two of Hopewell's cousins, Sarah and Emily Foster of Lexington, are members of the UK Women's Tennis team.
