The publication of repulsive photographs documenting abuse of Iraqi prisoners by American guards is the latest disaster of "Operation Iraqi Freedom." There was already plenty of resentment and hatred among Islamic peoples over our unprovoked invasion and occupation of Iraq, and Bush's recent endorsement of Israeli expansion into Palestinian land on the West Bank. Now American male and female soldiers have proudly photographed themselves engaging in various forms of sexual humiliation of Iraqi prisoners. The fact that they photographed themselves suggests that they didn't see themselves as disobeying orders.
There's a lot of talk from the Bush administration about the disgrace brought on America by "a few bad apples." Let's hope that the military doesn't get away with pinning the blame for prisoner abuse only on a few privates and sergeants while going lightly on the higher ranking officers responsible for the treatment and interrogation of prisoners in Al Ghraib and elsewhere in Iraq.
