BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Centre College senior Ryan New broke a school record in the 400-meter dash Friday in his bid to qualify for the Division III national championships.
New turned in a time of 48.33 seconds in the Billy Hays Invitational, a last-chance meet at Indiana University, breaking Chris Bastin's 1980 record by .01 seconds and earning a provisional spot in the national meet.
He improved his personal best by four-tenths of a second and is currently ranked 21st in the nation in Division III, and the top 22 runners will compete in the nationals May 27-29 at Decatur, Ill.
"He's a phenomenal athlete, and he deserves this more than anyone I can think of," Centre coach Lisa Owens said.
Owens said New could compete in another meet if he is bumped off the qualifying bubble.
Eileen Schilling had previously qualified in the 10,000 and is ranked 19th in the nation, and Owens said she will run again Thursday in Chicago in hopes of improving her time and ranking.
