Mr. Brian Cooney's hatred of President Bush has once again resulted in a lack of any rational judgment.
I share Mr. Cooney's outrage that American soldiers would act in such a despicable manner. Those involved should be severely punished for their actions. They have brought disgrace to our military and to our country. However, I fail to see how it shows incompetence on the part of either President Bush or Secretary Rumsfeld. Mr. Cooney has probably never served in the military. If he had, he might show a little more understanding. Even a company commander can only punish those responsible for violating regulations and failing to follow established policy. They cannot prevent violations from occurring. I have not heard of any evidence that there was an established policy of torturing prisoners. The military is a cross-section of our society. There are a lot of "bad apples" in our society. Unfortunately, some of them get into military service.
