LIBERTY - A trial for a former Liberty police officer accused of killing a man last year in his mother's kitchen has been moved to Adair County Circuit Court.
Circuit Judge James G. Weddle of Liberty approved the change of venue earlier this week. The trial will begin at 9 a.m. (CST) June 9 in Columbia.
A Casey County jury could not reach a verdict when Leo Daniel "Danny" Cook Jr. of Louisville was on trial in March in Casey Circuit Court. The jury deliberated 14 hours before the case was declared a mistrial.
Cook was charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of Leon Brown last summer. Cook went to check out a disturbance in an apartment shared by Brown and his friend, Freda Wilson, and her four children. Brown reportedly ran to his mother's house where he was shot by Cook. Brown died seven hours later at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.
