May 13, 2004

Sisters Sarah and Monica Vonderbrink had three hits each and Sarah Vonderbrink earned the pitching win as Danville defeated Burgin 12-2 in five innings Wednesday at Troy Trumbo Field.

Danville (15-14) scored in every inning, and Monica Vonderbrink and Renee Chiu drove in two runs each.

The Lady Admirals hit the ground running with four runs in the first inning, but Burgin coach Matt Grimes said his team has had far worse starts against Danville.

"The past couple years, when we've played danville, they've always come off with a bang at beginning of the game, eight or nine runs" Grimes said. "I was impressed we held our composure. We did do some good things, but errors kept us from doing a lot more."

Kelly Embree, Callie Harper and Liz Ruth each had one of Danville's nine hits, and Embree, Harper, Sarah Vonderbrink, Courtney Frye and Jerrica Potts added RBIs.

Sarah Vonderbrink allowed five hits and no walks and had six strikeouts.

Losing pitcher Taylor Bottoms struck out six and walked five for Burgin (8-12).

Lincoln County 4, Shelby County 2, 10 innings - At Shelbyville, Kendra Garris and Jessica Stringer had three hits and scored 10th-inning runs to lift Lincoln (8-14) over Shelby.

Both teams were scoreless for four innings before Lincoln broke through in the 10th, and Lincoln coach Pam Young said her team kept Shelby at bay with good defense.

"We did a great job defensively," Young said. "We knew Shelby County was a good team, and we had to stay focused to win the game. Jessica Stringer did an excellent job for us at shortstop today."

Garris had eight stolen bases and scored three runs for Lincoln, while Stringer and Sarah Fitzpatrick, who had two hits, each had a double. Jana Crabtree, Becky Schuler, Shakelia Miller each had singles.

Shelby outhit Lincoln 13-11, but winning pitcher Crabtree walked only two batters.

"It was a really good win for us, and hopefully it'll motivate us for the games to come," Young said.
