STANFORD - A Lincoln County grand jury Friday indicted kidnapping suspect Tanya D. Shelton, 24, of Lexington, on charges of kidnapping and second-degree burglary.
Shelton was arrested April 2 after newborn Grayci Barrows was reported missing from Fort Logan Hospital. Grayci Barrows was born the previous day and was only approximately 14 hours old at the time of the alleged abduction.
Shelton, a part-time employee of the maternity ward, allegedly wore her uniform into the hospital April 2 while off duty and took the baby from her mother. Grayci Barrows, daughter of Samantha Luttrell and Cory Barrows, was later found in an alley in Bowling Green by a woman out for a walk. She was transferred to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville for treatment for hypothermia and other possible breathing problems.
The case triggered the state's first deployment of an Amber Alert, a process by which law enforcement agencies and the media are notified of a possible child abduction.
