Mercer kicker, Casey lineman are among Centre signees

Kicker Jason Chadwick of Mercer County and defensive lineman Andrew Allen of Casey County are among the 29 new players in Centre College football coach Andy Frye's recruiting class.

Chadwick was 30-for-31 on extra points and 12-for-16 on field goals, including four longer than 40 yards, last season. He made 10 straight field goals, the state's third best mark, and was named to The Advocate-Messenger All-Area Team.

Allen, a state powerlifting champion, had 119 tackles, including 10 quarterback sacks, and caused two fumbles last year. He also earned All-Area honors.

"Overall this class is as good as we've had in a long time," Frye said. "We've got some outstanding prospects in the offensive and defensive lines, which is where graduation hurt us the most.

"We're also bringing in some good linebackers who will contribute down the road because all three of our current linebackers will be seniors this fall."

In addition to Chadwick, Centre's incoming class also includes Washington County kicker Matthew Cocanougher.

"Another area that we have improved is our kicking," Frye said. "We're created competition in that phase of the game."

Frye's class also includes offensive tackle Jerrod Stump of East Jessamine and receivers Travis Stephens of Lafayette and Justin Moore of Lexington Christian. The Colonels are also adding players from Ashland, Beechwood, St. Xavier and Beechwood in Kentucky as well as traditional Ohio powers Hamilton, Oakwood and Colerain.

"Centre cannot depend solely on Kentucky as a primary recruiting base because our academic standards are so tough," Frye said. "We've done a good job spreading out to other states to get kids who can qualify. I believe we've got a lot players who can help us win."

Centre, which opens the season Sept. 4 at Bluffton (Ohio), finished 8-2 last year and was Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference co-champion.

Other players who have committed to Centre are as follows: V.J. Anderson, Hamilton (Ohio), receiver; Kyle Barnette, Lawrence County, receiver; Paul Boccieri, Valley, receiver; Tyler Boron, Soddy Daisy (Tenn.), defensive back; Kyle Bumgarner, El Paso Chapin (Texas); Mark Cornette, Sheldon Clark, defensive back; Tyler Francisco, Cumberland Gap (Tenn.), defensive back; Thomas Gregory, Oakwood (Ohio), offensive lineman; Chris Jackson, Columbia Central (Tenn.), center; Matt Johnson, Ashland, linebacker;
