BEREA - Garrard County eighth-grader Phillip Arndt and Danville freshmen Casey Maupin and Chris Bright have qualified for the state tennis tournament.

Arndt finished second in the 9th Region Tournament singles here Sunday while Maupin and Bright were second in the doubles.

Danville finished third in the team standings, one point behind eventual winner Model and runner-up Russell County.

"We did pretty well," said Danville coach Mark Mojesky. "We just missed qualifying our whole team for the state, but all our guys played well. We only lose one senior off this team, so we have a chance to improve and get better for next year."

Maupin and Bright, seeded eighth, got to Sunday's final by beating Model's Donaldson and Taylor, the fourth-seeded team, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 in the semifinals. Russell's Keaton and Eubank advanced to the final with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Harrodsburg's Robbie Merriman and Travis White.

"Merriman and White had a good tournament," Harrodsburg coach Duane Dunagan said. "They exceeded all our expectations. It was really a good effort on their part."

In the title match, Russell beat Danville 6-1, 6-3.

"They upset Model's No. 1 team and Somerset's No. 1 team in the tournament," Mojesky said of Maupin and Bright. "Russell County has a very good team, but I also think the tough semifinal match took a little bit out of us.

"I'm really pleased with the way they played. They had only played a few matches together before the regional because we spent a lot of the year searching for the right doubles teams. Finally the chemistry clicked with them and I knew they were going to have a good tournament."

Arndt, the No. 2 seed, beat Berea's Jerome Lewis 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals while Model's Jeff Rutherford, the top seed, downed Danville's Jeff Ricker 6-2, 6-1.

In the singles championship match, Rutherford beat Arndt 6-2, 6-0. Rutherford was the only regional player to beat Arndt during the regular season.
