STARS Summer Camp (Success Through Arts, Recreation and Schools)

Dates: June 14-25, divided into two, week-long sessions.

Ages: grades K-5.

Times: 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. daily at Woodlawn Elementary School.

Cost: $60 per week, includes transportation, breakfast and lunch.

YMCA will offer daily, extended programs for an additional charge from 1:30-6 p.m. Call (859) 236-0359.

STARS activities include: Light Span, which increases reading and math skills with Playstation games; Adventure Life Camp; Careers in Action, which explores medicine, arts and humanities; and puppetry, clowning, videography and pool time. The pool will be at the Kentucky School for the Deaf. The camp staff includes certified teachers, Adventure Life camp staff, Fox Farm Video camp staff, Americorps VISTA volunteers and mentors.


YMCA programs

* Summer day camp

Dates: The Mercer County program will be located at the YMCA in Harrodsburg June 7-July 21. The Boyle County program will be 1:30-6 p.m. June 7-25 and all day July 6-23 at Woodlawn Elementary School.

Ages: 5-12 years old.

Times: 6:30 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays.

Half-day program is $40, with additional discounts for a second or third child in the same family. The all-day program is $75, $140 for two and $205 for three. Scholarships are available.

The 2004 curriculum is titled "Camp Character" and is designed to keep children active while providing a safe, fun environment for learning. Weekly themes are the guiding force for daily activities. Campers will work on projects in the community, visit senior citizens and deliver cards and crafts to extended care patients. The YMCA believes that by sharing with others to make a difference, the children will learn to become caring, responsible young men and women who take pride in giving back to the community.

YMCA charges a $20 annual fee per child.

* Swim lessons

Dates: Swim lessons are offered in three convenient sessions, beginning June 7-18; June 28-July 9, with no classes on July 5; and July 12-23. Sessions are Monday through Thursdays for two weeks at Centre College pool, with Fridays as make-up days if lessons are canceled.

Ages: 3-12. All students are skill tested, then assigned to a proper class level.

Cost: preschool ages 3-5, $30 for half an hour; and youth ages 6-12, $40 for 45 minutes. Need to be YMCA members, which is an annual $20 fee.

* Swimming lessons

Dates: Session 1, June 7-11; session 2, June 14-18; session 3, June 21-25; session 4, June 28-July 2; session 5, July 5-9; session 6, July 12-16; session 7, July 19-23; session 8, July 26-30; and session 9, Aug. 2-6. Classes are divided into beginner through advanced. Beginner classes last 30 minutes and intermediate and advanced classes last 45 minutes.

Ages: 3-12.

Cost: $25 per child for five-day sessions, with a $5 discount for additional children in the same family. Lessons given at Davis Recreation Complex.

* Millennium Park Summer Day Camp

Dates: Beginning June 7, Monday through Thursday. Parents will drop off children at 10 a.m. at the park and pick up children at the pool between 2 and 3 p.m. A $2 charge will apply per day for children who stay at the pool after pick-up time.

Ages: 7-12.

Cost: $25 per week, with a $10 discount for children in the same family.

Supervised games and arts and crafts. Children will be taken to the pool at noon for swimming. Lunch is provided.

* Public pool

Open noon-7 p.m. and 1-6 p.m. beginning Saturday at William E. "Bunny" Davis Recreation Complex. The pool closes at 4 p.m. on certain Wednesdays due to swim meets. All children under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Cost: $3, or $2 after 5 p.m.

Season memberships: family, $125, or individual, $75.

* Tennis clinic

Dates: June 7-July 14.

Ages: 6-13.

Novice, 9-10:15 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; intermediate, 10:30-11:45 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays; and advanced, 9:30-11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Cost: $25. Preregister. Bring your own racquet.

Boyle County Youth Football Camp

Dates: 5-8 p.m. July 9 and 9 a.m.-noon July 10 at Boyle County High School.

Ages: Grades 3-8.

Cost: $45.

Contact Boyle County High School Football coach Chuck Smith at (859) 236-5047 or 236-3410. Each position is supervised by high school coaching staff. Pizza will be served for lunch and T-shirts will be given to each player.

Lady Rebels Basketball Camp

Dates: 9 a.m.-noon June 1-4 at Boyle County High School.

Ages: grades K-8.

Instructor: Coach Judie Mason.

Cost: $50, with $10 deposit required.
