Don't blame military for stupidity of a few

May 27, 2004

Dear Editor:

Here we go again! Another brain-washed liberal who thinks that our U. S. military is just a bunch of trained killers.

Mr. James Hoover alleges that our soldiers are given aggression training so they will be more willing to kill the enemy. (He doesn't even acknowledge that's why we have a military in the first place.) In Vietnam, I learned that somebody out there was trying to kill me and that I should do it to him first. Mr. Hoover also fantasizes that only "Republican officers run our military" in "selfish and exploitative" ways. That is quite a stretch, what with Congress doing the exploitation and overseeing the military.

Categorizing the punishment of Iraqi prisoners as atrocities comes right out of the liberal media's playbook. If Mr. Hoover wants to place blame for that behavior somewhere, then he should view the horrific images of brutality, destruction, and death in video games and movies marketed to our young people today. A recent movie, "Kill Bill," depicts rapes, beatings, severed limbs, etc., and was very popular with teenagers.

Studies have shown that even children in daycare centers and grade schools exhibit violent acts they learned from video games and movies. Youngsters are being desensitized to violence. Maybe the perpetrators of the "atrocities" on the prisoners in Iraq were raised on this type of violent imagery. They can't tell fantasy from reality.

You can't blame the entire military for the stupidity of a few. I support our troops!
