How you can be a Rape Crisis Center volunteer

June 01, 2004

Who... If you are female and at least 20 years of age and have reliable transportation, a flexible schedule and a willingness to go to bat for rape victims, then you meet the minimum requirements to serve as a volunteer advocate with the Danville satellite office of the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center. The office serves Boyle, Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer counties and also Jessamine County.

What... Volunteer advocates take turns serving on a 24-hour, on-call basis. When contacted via pager by the Crisis Hotline, the volunteer advocate will immediately go to the emergency room of an area hospital and assist the victim with any immediate needs, such as shelter, food and child care arrangements as well as emotional support. After that, the volunteer advocate will assist the victim as she or he goes through the criminal justice system, including meetings with law enforcement officers, prosecutors and private attorneys and court proceedings.
