There is a critically low supply of blood, primarily for types O positive and O negative.
"Hospitals are canceling scheduled surgeries due to the shortage," said Mary R. Begley, Director of Marketing and Planning at Ephraim McDowell Health. Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center canceled 13 surgical procedures on Friday due to the shortage of blood.
This weekend the Central Kentucky Blood Center, located at 330 Walter Avenue in Lexington, will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., if anyone is interested in donating.
A special blood drive will be held on Friday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ben Franklin room at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.
