Davidson College pitcher Brian Akin of Louisville was picked in the 14th round of Monday's major league baseball draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
His parents - Rosemary (Edmiston) and Jim Akin - are both Danville natives and Danville High School graduates.
Akin, a 22-year-old right-handed pitcher, was 8-3 with a 3.30 earned run average last season in 14 starts. He had 95 strikeouts and 30 walks in 101 innings and gave up 87 hits.
"We are all just thrilled that he got picked," said Rose Edmiston, his grandmother who lives in Danville.
Kentucky's Shane Boyd was picked in the 12th round by the Minnesota Twins. Boyd, who is expected to be UK's starting quarterback this season, was a relief pitcher for UK last season. He had a 0-1 record with a 8.59 earned run average in 16 games.
The Twins picked Boyd in the 13th round in 2000, but he decided to play college football.
