The second trial of a former Liberty police officer accused of killing a man in his mother’s kitchen begins today in Adair County Circuit Court.
The first trial of Leo Daniel “Danny” Cook Jr. ended in a mistrial when the Casey County jury deadlocked after 13 hours of deliberations. The vote was 9-3 to acquit, jurors said.
Cook was indicted on second-degree manslaughter charges in the death of Leon Brown last summer. He faces five to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Cook shot Brown on July 30, 2003, in the home of Brown’s mother in Liberty. Cook, 40, had responded to a report of domestic violence involving Brown and his girlfriend, Freda Wilson. It was the sixth 911 call from the couple’s apartment that day.
