Prison scandal reaching higher into Bush administration

June 17, 2004

Dear Editor:

As the whole world can surely see, the Abu Ghraib prison scandal is reaching higher and higher into the Bush administration and the military commanders in Iraq and Guantanamo.

Yet one can still listen to Fox News, talk radio or read in the conservative media and find a vast army of Bush apologists. These people say without the slightest hesitation that the prisoners in Iraq deserve maltreatment and torture because of what they did on Sept. 11. For once and for all, let the record be clear that Iraq had nothing to do with that horrible attack on our nation. The Bush administration missed the opportunity to get those responsible for that misdeed and instead squandered more than 800 young American lives on a personal vendetta.

Now, through leaked memos, we see that the Bush administration is actively putting forth the idea that we are not bound by the Geneva Conventions. These very conventions are designed and agreed to by the United States in order to protect our soldiers in the event that they are captured. My own son is in the military and has been to Iraq once and will likely return. Now the Bush crowd is actually doing things that put his life in even more danger if he is captured.

One can only assume that these criminals do not have sons and daughters who are serving over there.

Those of us who do care deeply about our soldiers and this nation must band together and vote these madmen out before they can do even more damage.
