If there were ever any doubts about whether local residents want to have a downtown organization like the Heart of Danville and the events and activities it sponsors, those doubts should now be dispelled.
There has been an outpouring of support for events sponsored by Heart of Danville that it is no longer able to pay for - the farmers' market, arts market and the nine-week summer concert series, Whimsy in Weisiger.
With support from Greenline Implements for the farmers' market and backing from the local Arts Commission for concerts by three local bands, it looks like this summer's downtown events will go on as planned. The Heart of Danville is still looking for funding for three concerts, but given the support shown for the organization, our bet is that more individuals, business or organizations will decide to keep the music playing.
Of course, that still leaves other Heart of Danville events, such as the Front Porch Tour, the Christmas parade and Cruise-In unfunded, and it's unlikely that the organization can survive without more funding from local government.
