Area players named Academic All-State

June 23, 2004

Eight area softball players were named to the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association Academic All-State first team.

Burgin's Jessica Allen, Meredith Lear and Stephanie Stewart, Danville's Renee Chiu and Amber Wood, Garrard County's Betsy Ball and Sara Carrier and Mercer County's Erin Ashford all earned first-team recognition.

Players had to be nominated by their coach, who must be a member of the KSCA, and be at least a junior. To make first team, a player must have a 3.75 grade-point average; for second team, a 3.5, and for honorable mention, a 3.25. Players must also participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games.

Honorable Mention

Kim Byrd, Mercer; Brittany Gilbert, Garrard; Kia Howard, Garrard.
