LIBERTY - Groundbreaking for the new Jones Park Elementary School could begin within a month if the state goes along with the construction project.
An $8.1 million contract to build the elementary school on the east side of Casey County was approved Thursday by the Board of Education. The contract went to DW Wilburn Inc. of Lexington, after the company cut more than $1 million from its original bid to go along with the school board's request.
After the company's base bid of $8,268,000 plus $273,000 in alternative bids came in over budget on June 18, the school board agreed to make 10 changes in the project to cut $1 million in costs. The estimated cost was $7.5 million.
The school board agreed Wednesday to modify the design and spend some of its contingency funds to restore some of the cuts. The largest cuts included $57,000 for bleachers in the gymnasium and $60,000 for a digital camera security system.
