Mercer 12s get big victory

The Danville-Boyle County 9- and 10-year-old all-stars won their first two games by one run each in the district tournament at Lawrenceburg.

Danville-Boyle won its opening game 7-6 over Woodford County in nine innings Friday, then defeated Gardenside National 6-5 Saturday.

A single up the middle by Casey Whittle in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Danville-Boyle to Friday's win. His two-out hit capped a three-run rally in the ninth.

Jacob Pike had a double and a single, while Max Meckes scored two runs and had a single.

Meckes, Dowell Harmon and Clay Young combined for the win. Meckes had six strikeouts in three innings.

In Saturday's game, two runs in the bottom of the sixth led to a 6-5 comeback win over Gardenside National. Young had a triple in the four-run fifth inning and also singled earlier in the game. Harmon, Lucas Edelen and Jarred Harrington also had hits for Danville-Boyle.


Hunter Sheegog pitched the complete game, giving up five hits.

The team plays again this afternoon.

Mercer 12s win big

The Mercer County 11- and 12-year-old all-stars opened their tournament with an 11-3 win over Eastern American at Gardenside Park in Lexington.

Zeke Edwards and Chatham Lynn each homered for Mercer.

Edwards had four hits, including a double and a home run, and had 3 RBIs while Lynn had three hits, two doubles and five RBIs.

Matthew Honchel had three singles and an RBI and Lyndon Compton and Adam Gooch each had two singles. Trenton Hazelwood, Cody Phillips and Jarrod Carter each singled, while Phillips and Carter had RBIs.

Mercer finished with 17 hits and no errors.

Gooch picked up the complete game winning, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out eight.
