Congratulations to residents of the neighborhoods on the north side of Millennium Park who have sparked a renewed effort to encourage contributions by private individuals and groups to the development of the park.
Residents of the Argyll, Argyll Woods, Lannock Place and Lannock Village developments recently donated $1,800 to place a gazebo in the park. The private donations were matched by Danville-Boyle County Parks and Recreation Department, which will use the funds to do landscaping around the gazebo.
More importantly, the efforts of neighborhood residents have inspired the Parks and Recreation Department to set aside $40,000 in the current budget year to match contributions by other private groups and individuals.
That's a great way to leverage tax dollars to complete projects that are included on the park's master plan but have not yet been done because of lack of funds. Certainly, all of those projects will be completed someday. Their completion can be speeded along, however, if private groups become more involved in the effort and local government rewards their efforts with matching funds.
