McAtee's love of music leads to summer gospel sing

Linda McAtee's love of music is in part the reason she and other members of her church choir are putting on the Summer Gospel Celebration Saturday afternoon.

"I just love to sing, especially gospel music,'' McAtee said last week. "I've always wanted to put together a gospel sing.'' She and other members of the Christ the Head Missionary Church Praise Team Choir are putting the event together.

The choir needed a larger place for the celebration and so it will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Life Center at 555 E. Lexington Ave.

The sponsors hope this celebration will be an opportunity for all Christians to have fellowship, and praise and worship God with no barriers of race or denomination put in the way. "It will be a great time of fellowship of all Christian people,'' McAtee says.

Soloists, instrumentalists and gospel groups will be part of the celebration and they come not only from Danville, but also from Lexington and Lebanon as well as Perryville.

In addition to her love of music, McAtee said she hopes the celebration will help with her church's building fund. A love offering will be taken during the event Saturday.

The Christ the Head Missionary Church has been in existence for eight years, she said, but the church's new home on East Main Street is only three years old and not all of the building has been completed.

She said she hopes the love offering will help the church finish the upstairs portion of the sanctuary for more room during church services. The church already has a day-care center, but it is on the ground floor of the building.

McAtee said she wanted to put together a youth gospel sing, but that didn't work out, and she hopes to have help with the sing Saturday.

"It's not something I've done before,'' she said. "Through God's grace, I pray it will be a big event.'' Even with God's help, McAtee is a little nervous about her first event of this kind and size. "I try not to think what a big deal it is.''

Other church members are participating and planning and McAtee has done much of her work with the telephone and e-mail.

Food will be available for those in attendance and McAtee said she welcomes any donations of food for the event.
