SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Danville and a local Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus were honored with a national award this week during the Catholic service agency's annual convention in Dallas.
The local parish and Grand Knight Jim McGrath of Danville, along with other state Knights officials, received the International Service Program Award in the church activities category for helping a Ugandan priest get a set of wheels to serve his parish in rural Africa.
McGrath couldn't be reached for comment, but according to the Knights' Web site, Father Paul Kkonde served as interim priest at SS. Peter and Paul last summer. When Kkonde mentioned that few priests in Uganda have cars and must rely on walking or cycling to visit their parishioners, his friends here were inspired to help out.
The "Give a Priest a Ride Knights of Columbus Golf Scramble" was organized by the Thomas J. Malloy Council 6317 and held last August, attracting more than 20 teams. Overall, the council raised $11,000, which Kkonde used to buy a car and take it back with him to Uganda.
