A former Centre College tennis player died Saturday from injuries he suffered after being struck by an alleged drunken driver Friday night while crossing a street in downtown Lexington.
Preston Hoffman, an economics major who graduated from Centre in 2003, died about 11 a.m. Saturday at the University of Kentucky Trauma Center, said Lexington police Sgt. Jay Postlewaite. Hoffman was trying to cross Main Street about 10:30 p.m. Friday when he was hit by a car whose driver was later charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants, Postlewaite said.
The driver, Thomas Johns Jr., 41, of Lexington, was not injured.
Witnesses told police Hoffman, who worked as an financial adviser in Lexington, and two others were trying to cross Main Street in the middle of a block - not at a corner or crosswalk - when a late-model Volkswagen Beetle turned the corner and headed toward them. Hoffman's companions safely made a dash for the other side of the street while Hoffman apparently decided he couldn't make it and turned around, police said.
