FRANKFORT - Dr. Penny Smith, a Danville native, has been named executive director of the Office for Employment and Training, an agency of the Education Cabinet's Department for Workforce Investment.
She will be heading the state's Unemployment Insurance, Wagner/Peyser and Workforce Investment Act programs.
Smith, who now lives in Lexington, is enthused about returning to her home state, having worked in many southern states the past several years. "I'm enjoying the new position," Smith said. "I'm excited to come back home, and I'm excited to be able to help Kentuckians."
Prior to her appointment by Governor Ernie Fletcher, Smith had been the regional training and technical assistance coordinator for the Head Start program, with the Administration for Children and Families Atlanta office of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
She was previously director of family assistance programs in the Tennessee Department of Human Services implementing welfare, food stamps, and Medicaid policies. She had been manager of Tennessee's Workforce Investment Act, developing and implementing eligible training provider list policies for the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.
